Today we conclude our series of interviews with the candidates for elected office in Boulder City for the primary election in early June. The positions being contested are 1) the Justice of the Peace, replacing Judge Victor Miller, who is not running for re-election, and 2) two positions on City Council. There are several other candidates for both positions, but they didn’t respond to our offer to do a podcast with them. Today, we sit down with a candidate for City Council, Dan Patterson. His podcast took a rather strange twist after it was recorded. Several city residents posted news that Patterson had been a member of the legislature in Arizona but resigned shortly before he was to judged by the rest of the Arizona House of Representative for Ethics violations. He never mentioned that he had experience with elected office during the podcast. But as a resident of Boulder City, he certainly has a right to run for council. Now it’s up to the voters to determine if he was transparent enough during this interview. He  spoke with BC Podcast host Roger Gros at the podcast office in Boulder City in April.

Today, we sit down with a candidate for City Council, Denise Ashurst. Denise moved to Boulder City after careers in the U.S. Air Force, the Department of Energy, and National Nuclear Security Administration at the Nevada Test Site. She ran for state Senate two years ago and lost by just a handful of votes. Denise has given back to the community through her  involvement in many local organizations. She has lived in Boulder City for 25 years and has raised her children here, one of which has Downs syndrome. Szafranski is an attorney in Boulder City who has lived in town since she was three years old, minus some time for college, law school and entry level legal positions. He has lots of experience with the justice system in Clark County and beyond and has appeared in the Boulder City court many times. Today we feature a discussion with Judge Victor Miller, Boulder City’s Justice of the Peach for the last 30 some years, with over 40 years serving the town as a municipal judge. Although his name is on the sample ballot, he’s not going to be on the primary ballot in June or the general election ballot in November.  His accomplishments as a judge are too long to list in one podcast, but his formation of the Drug Court in Boulder City has a tremendous success rate, and his involvement in the construction of the city’s courthouse are just a few of them. Three candidates have announced their intention to run for Justice of the Peace and Miller explains the complexities of the job and the hours required to serve in that position. He sat down with Boulder City Podcast host Roger Gros in his courthouse office in late February.

In this episode of the Boulder City Podcast, we are joined by Becky and James Hughes, the proprietors of Hanger 502, the new deli, bar and restaurant that will open this May in Boulder City. James Hughes spent 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, 10 of those years in Las Vegas. On weekends and holiday, James and his wife Becky would travel to Lake Mead to enjoy boating, stopping in Boulder City before and after each trip. One day in 2021, they spotted a “for sale” sign on the florist shop at the corner of Nevada Way and Arizona. Becky thought it was the perfect place to fulfill her lifelong dream of owning a deli, something that has been missing from the Boulder City scene. But once they gutted the property they realized it was a bigger space than was needed for a simple deli, and they added a bar and restaurant to that dream. Now as they approach the grand opening in the spring of the Air Force-themed Hanger 502, they sat down with Boulder City Podcast host Roger Gros in late February.

Today we have a very special podcast and we focus on the Dam Short Film Festival, which will be held in Boulder City on February 14-19. We have a special guest host, Shannon Gros, and we welcome Hava Brown, a board member of the DSFF, who will explain all the details of this year’s festival, celebrating its 20^th anniversary. Today we’re joined by Doug Scheppmann, who runs the local State Farm insurance agency and who was honored recently by the City Council of Boulder City for giving back to the community. Scheppmann arrived in Boulder City more than 40 years ago and quickly began to volunteer for various organizations in the town. He was one of the first members of Sunrise Rotary, and has been involved in their Graduation Night Out for high school senior, one of the most popular events for those young people. He also was involved in helping Judge Victor Miller to set up the Boulder City Drug Court that helps people into recovery when the commit a drug-related crime, an effort that has saved hundreds of lives.
